Dalai Lama sez..."If you have a Green Party, I want to join"

The Dalai Lama was making a presentation at the University of Michigan, and was asked by a graduate student studying sustainability "What is your advice to help us maintain hope given the magnitude of the challenge?"

After explaining that the people all across the world have become more aware of environmental concerns in recent decades, and have organized around environmental concerns into Green Parties across the globe, he asks if there is a Green Party here. The audience chuckles, and the Dalai Lama says "If you have a Green Party, I want to join." I know! Amazing, right?

If you care to watch, the video is posted at Green News and Opinion.

Nader chooses Matt Gonzalez

Ralph Nader announced that Matt Gonzalez is his running mate in 2008. The announcement is at VoteNader.org

The announcement makes absolutely no mention of the Green Party.

Arizona Greens need help

Each state faces ballot access issues. For us here in South Carolina those ballot access issues are small. All we need do to maintain ballot access is run at least one candidate for partisan office at least once every four years. How great is that?

Sadly, this is not the case everywhere. In Arizona for example, the state Green Party must conduct a fresh ballot access drive every few years.

start spreading the news...

I wrote a while back about a book I had read called "How the right used new and alternative media to seize control" or something similar. In the book he describes the combination of self-published books, magazines and newsletters created and distributed by conservatives who couldn't get the time of day from the corporate media.

I believe we can and should follow their example. Blogs are one example of how we are doing this.

Reform ideas?

Thomas brought his concerns to us, and I hope more of you who visit here will share your opinions and ideas. Heck, the man asked for reasons, right?

I have asked myself at my own blog time and again, "Is this the best use of my time?" I decided that serving on national committees was not the best use of my time, so I quit all of them. I lost election to the state steering committee and took a year off from that responsibility, and was approached by one of the committee members who was still there to run this year. I did, and am serving there now.

Look to the "recent comments" sidebar

commoner set this blog up, and as traffic and participation grew the site attracted some folks who wanted to post spam here. She then set up an "Akismet" thingy which puts comments into a queue for review and eventual publication or rejection.

commoner has given me, and others I assume, the opportunity to review and either publish or reject these comments. Normally I left all that in commoner's hands, but since she has been less able to invest time here than I know she would like, I have taken up the slack a bit. Sadly, I am sure I am not doing as good a job as I could. Therefore...

Chavez & Uribe Dance, Betancourt and Rojas suffer

The Associated Press is reporting that President Uribe of Colombia has decided to suspend Hugo Chavez's role in negotiating the possible release of prisoners, including Ingrid Betancourt, by the FARC. The AP reports that Uribe has done this because Chavez initiated contact with the head of Colombia's military.

Four Pillars

The Green Party here in the united States is a part of a global Green Party movement. That movement is based, in part, on the Four Pillars: Ecological Wisdom, Grassroots democracy, Non-violence and Social Justice.

To post, or not to post

I got an email recently from another fellow who posts her regularly. He pointed out that very few of us are responsible for most of the recent posts here, and I note that the group of folks in question are all men.

I worry...do I speak too forcefully, making others afraid to speak their mind? I have been told that men often have this problem. Do others not have information, ideas, opinions or stories to share, or are the rest of you too busy "in the streets" to post here?

Letter from labor

This is a copy of a message sent to me by Eric Lee of LabourStart.org.

Marco Tulio laid to rest.

How many deaths will it take till we know that too many people have died?

That's the question Bob Dylan asked in his 1962 song, "Blowin' in the Wind".

And it's the question I'm asking you now -- to each and every person on this mailing list.

Advice, guidance wanted

I am blessed to have a candidate to campaign for locally. Bryan Smith, a member of the South Carolina Green Party steering committee, has announced that he is seeking a seat on the Fort Mill town council.

Bryan has an excellent shot at winning this non-partisan race, in part because he was born here and lives in the home his parents raised him in. With better than twenty members of his extended family in the town, he is no shoo in, but it's not an impossible mission.

I have two questions I would like to pose to you folks here and ask that you give me your best thinking either in a comment here or via email. I can be reached via email at GreggJocoy@riseup.net

Let the sun shine

As most of us know, the Lamestream Media has been shouting to the rafters that the same folks who brought us air you can chew now have the "right stuff" to fix the problem they created.

The solution? Nukes. Riiiight. Nukes. I said that in my very best Family Guy voice.

Well, if you are one of those who is not convinced that splitting the very fabric of existence to boil water is a great idea, then perhaps you should consider signing this statement

I hate to be obnoxious, but...

Proposal 238 established the Green Party Peace Action Committee, otherwise known as GPAX. Proposing their own creation was, as I have pointed out here and elsewhere, a violation of our national policies and procedures, which require that all proposals come from state chapters, standing committees, or established caucuses. Since GPAX was none of these things, the proposal was improperly made.

Now I read the minutes of the national party steering committee, which includes at least one member of GPAX, and find the following.

4) - received 6/14/07; revised, 7/27/076 - GPAX: Revised GPAX Mission Statement and P&Ps
