bush confesses to war crimes; implicates cabinet, democratic leaders

Well, it’s official.  In an interview with ABC news, White House resident George Bush said, …”yes, I’m aware our national security team met on this issue (using torture).

CONTINENTAL CONGRESS TO CONVENE IN TENNESSEE

The North American Bioregional Congress is coming to Tennessee in 2009.  Its three hundred or so participants will arrive at The Farm, in Summertown, next September. They will spend a week in intensive interaction, and then journey back to their respective bioregions, inspired through communion at the Congress to ever more deeply reinhabit their home watersheds and bring their friends and neighbors back–or is it forward?–to Earth as well.

OK, WHAT'S "PLAN C"?

If you are looking for a book that unblinkingly, unemotionally, lays out exactly how, and how badly, we are screwing up this planet, you are looking for Lester Brown’s Plan B 3.0.

If you are looking for a book that gives some idea of what could be done to at least soften the impact of the crash that is happening, you are looking for Lester Brown’s Plan B 3.0

"ONCE MORE UNTO THE BREACH, GOOD FRIENDS"...

The Green Party of Tennessee met in a smoke-free back room at Nashville’s Italian Market last Saturday.  I’d like to say we decided the future of Tennessee, with Party co-chair Katey Culver playing the part of capa di tutti capi, but overall I’m afraid our effect on Tennessee politics is just not that powerful.

WORLD MADE BY HAND

As a kid, two of the first adult books I read that made a deep impression on me were Neville Shute’s On the Beach and Pat Frank’s Alas, Babylon, both of which portrayed the lives of everyday people in the aftermath of nuclear war.

JIM COOPER, WAR CRIMINAL?

A couple of years ago, my friend Ginny Welsch ran for US Congress here in the 5th District, which, unlike many bizarrely gerrymandered districts in this state, neatly encompasses Nashville and its near suburbs, and is known as an island of Democratic Party dominance in a sea of rural, redneck Republicanism.

HEALTH CARE FLIM-FLAM

The Democratic front runners have prostituted the language again. “Univeral health care,” according to all three of them, now means subsidizing the insurance companies rather than actually providing health care for everyone. They’ve dropped the phrase “single-payer” from their vocabulary, largely at the behest of the insurance companies that support them.

''I WENT DOWN TO THE DEMONSTRATION...

...to get my fair share of abuse,” Mick Jagger wrote nearly forty years ago. Well, Mr. Street-Fighting Man, some of us are still going down to the demonstrations, but what we get these days is more like benign neglect than abuse, at least most of the time, at least from the public. The old days of passers-by shouting insults, flipping us off, and occasionally getting violent are no more.

Who needs terrorists? We've got Republicans in office!

The collapse of the I-35 bridge in Minneapolis-St. Paul cut especially close to me because I have two kids who live in Minneapolis. One of them was out of town at the time, and I knew the odds were long on the other one having been harmed, but I was very happy to hear his voice on the phone. He had been nowhere near the bridge.

FAITH-BASED LENDING

It sounds crazy: with home prices rising beyond reason and value, banks start giving variable interest loans to millions of people who previously wouldn't have been eligible for a home loan, due to low income. Call it “faith-based lending.”

NO MORE BLOOD FOR AIR CONDITONING

I was amazed to learn recently that a major chunk of the gasoline the US uses in Iraq goes for generators that are primarily used to run air conditioning—in tents. Air conditioned tents. In Iraq. In incredibly hot, sunny weather. All that sunshine pouring down, all that solar energy just bouncing back into infinite space, and American soldiers are getting killed driving fuel truck convoys to keep their air conditioning running—in tents. Why not just set the AC up outside and cool the whole country?

SLOWLY COMING TO A BOIL

Meanwhile, the mess in Washington just gets uglier. Democrats shot themselves in the foot this week when Senator Ben Nelson, who is technically a Democrat, sided with the Republicans in a committee vote on whether to cut off funding for Dick Cheney’s office in retaliation for his continued stonewalling of any attempt at Congressional oversight. Nelson is widely considered to be the most conservative Democrat in the Senate. He helped get Sam (Muss)Alito on the Supreme Court, supported John Bolton’s nomination to the UN, and is against allowing women to have power over their own bodies in the matter of abortion. With Democrats like that, who needs Republicans?

SICKO AT HEART

I have seen Michael Moore's movie, Sicko, this week, and I have to disagree strongly with most reviewers of the film. It is not a comedy. It is a tragedy. I cried through large parts of it and sat in the theater until the credits were over and the ushers came in to clean up the seats, just trying to get my composure back enough so that I wouldn't leave the movie house and go break out the windows at HCA. Bob Dylan's dream of St. Augustine ran through my head--”I awoke in anger/so alone and terrified/I put my fingers against the glass/and bowed my head and cried.”
