Motley crew pesters congresscritters

Yesterday several Santa Clara County Greens visited our three congressional representatives' offices. Just to make things more interesting we did the circuit on the VTA Light Rail trolley and Caltrain heavy rail, and Drew had his bicycle.

We presented our resolution demanding that they stop supporting the Iraq war. The congresscritters don't give a damn what we think, but it's important to keep bothering them. We also stopped at the mostly abandoned San Jose Mercury News office in Palo Alto. Carol Broullet ran for Congress against warmonger Anna Eshoo last year, and holds a weekly "rally" down the street from there. Lofgren's staff was friendly. Honda's and Eshoo's staff were rude, making no secret of the fact that they really don't want their constituents showing up at their district offices.

Tian took pictures. Here are some of us waiting for the trolley in San Jose's Japantown. From the left, me, Drew, Fred, Roy, and unidentified.

The IMPEACH! signs Drew and I are holding came off a laser printer I found at a thrift store for ten bucks. It was there because someone had fed it a Barbie doll. Amazingly, after I removed Barbie's arm (I used tweezers and chopsticks) from the fuser it worked fine. The "typesetting" was done by opening the default "US Letter" template in Kword, setting the default typefont (Ariel) to 432 point bold and the page orientation to landscape, typing IMPEACH!, and hitting print. KWord put two characters on each sheet, the printer rendered them at its native resolution, and I did the kerning with a scissors and clear packing tape.

Now, those are signs worthy of a serious demonstration. One of my pet peeves are demo signs written with a thin magic marker (or a pen!) with 20-30 words in a 24x36-inch space (or smaller!) and expecting it to be read and digested by motorists driving by at 35 mph (or faster!). I'm often a photographer at demonstrations and I just want to tell folks with such in hand, don't bother -- your unencumbered body makes a stronger statement.

While you missed one of our county's congressmen, Jerry McNerney, my emailed comment was responded to with a statement that they have just opened a new office in Pleasanton. His other office is in Stockton.

The way these districts are gerrymandered is crazy. But, McNerney has been to Morgan Hill more often already (1.5 months) than I can remember Pombo having been here in 4 years.
