Dear US Green Party members, Friends ~

This past Fourth of the July the inauguration of the first national impeachment center, the Los Angeles National Impeachment Center (LANIC), was spearheaded by Los Angeles area Greens and the Progressive Democrats of Los Angeles (PDA-LA).

Former Green Party California State Assembly candidate, Peter Thottam, is to be congratulated for conceiving the "storefront" concept in the impeachment center located at the well known "Peace Center" in LA, home to the offices of several humanitarian NGOs including CISPES headed by the ubiquitous activist Don White, Blase Bonpane's Office of the Americas and the Los Angeles Greens. Mr. Thottam has invested a large amount of time and personal finances to get this off the ground.

As of Independence Day, the "Peace Center" has now been transformed into the "Los Angeles National Impeachment Center" (LANIC).

Notable organizational contributions to our event on Weds. came from Glenn Mootney, Rebecca Tobias, Lisa Taylor, Eve Marian, Eugene Hernandez, Michael Jay, Cres Vellucci, Mathew Gerbasi, William Bassett, Linda Piera-Avila, Dr. Genevieve Marcus, Bob Smith, Anthony St. Martin and Ricco Ross. Marcy Winograd and Kevin McKeown were also very instrumental in the run up to Wednesday’s event.

We received voluminous news coverage from all the major outlets, including a featured piece by Howard Blume in the Los Angeles Times, the third most widely distributed newspaper in the United States, read all over the world. The LA Times is also virally carried by many other print venues including the AP Wire.

With House Judiciary Committee member Rep. Maxine Waters endorsing LANIC and committed to speak at the inauguration press conference and demonstration, we had specifically strategized to feature a "trans-partisan tenor" for our press releases and promotional announcements, concentrating on our shared issue of impeachment.

This trans-partisan posture paid off for the issue of impeachment, and paid off for the Green Party with testimonials like this one from the LA Times article,  "But the audience also included fresh recruits Trevor Torquato, 19, and Lauren Kuzma, 17, of Murrieta. "I'm actually new to politics," said Torquato. "I'm here to be educated. I'm going to register with the Green Party today."

The key thing to emphasize here is the seamless collaboration between passionate Greens and engaged Progressive Democrats -- to have a sitting Congresswoman, Rep. Maxine Waters, announce to all major media covering a press conference that, "Westside Greens, Progressive Democrats, Los Angeles Greens and the Santa Monica Democratic Club are to be lauded for this historic effort" is a major and penetrating accomplishment bringing together progressive voices to fill a vacuum that the Establishment political players are ignoring.

This is a sea change moment, if carried properly.

The establishment of the Los Angeles National Impeachment Center (LANIC) is a huge promotional opportunity that's very uniquely tailored for the United States Green Party, as the Democratic Party leadership has concertedly ignored the expressed wishes of the American people, and has shelved their sworn oath to defend and protect the Constitution by failing to pursue impeachment.

The current situation is similar to the Green Party lead recount efforts in Ohio following the 2004 election.

This is a call to action; we need Greens, progressives from all over the US to step up to the plate.

An effort will be forthcoming to establish impeachment centers, like the Los Angeles National Impeachment Center (LANIC) all over the country. Activists in several states like Minnesota, Missouri and Montana, in addition to cities such as San Diego have already contacted us and have expressed an interest in establishing impeachment centers. For example, the "San Diego National Impeachment Center" (SDNIC).

National Impeachment Centers can be replicated from town to town and state to state.

I would like to see the Green Party continue to be the innovative political leaders on impeachment, as we have shown with results here in LA with the launch of the first national impeachment center, which has been gloriously received with open arms by progressives and politically active Americans from all over the nation.

Q: CAN IMPEACHMENT REALLY HAPPEN?

A: The impeachment process could unfold very quickly as Nixon's impeachment serenade was only THREE months long; Clinton's four months. There are 18 months left in the Bush presidency. There are smoking guns showing up continually and most assuredly there are more skeletons in the "closet of lawless behavior" by the Bush administration.

Actions like the latest Libby commutation only portend to a future of more straws piling up on the proverbial camel's back until the weight brings down the White House.

In the recent ruling on the domestic NSA Spying case, American citizens were refused standing because of the secrecy of the program. Plaintiffs were unable to provide evidence of being spied upon and therefore the lower court's ruling of Constitutional illegality was overturned by the appeals court.

From the International Herald Tribune, "plaintiffs are ultimately prevented from establishing standing because of the state secrets privilege," a legal doctrine that requires courts to limit or dismiss cases if allowing them to proceed would disclose information harmful to national security." http://www.iht.com/articles/2007/07/06/news/spying.php

When US Citizens are legally blocked from seeking remedies to Presidential violations of the Constitution, and elected representatives are unwilling to hold the Bush administration accountable, we are entering an abominable era for our nation.

These legal moments are evidence of, and the progenitors to, police state authoritarianism; fascism.

We here in the United States are entering a catch-22 phase of American jurisprudence, where outright violations of the US Constitution are protected from legal correction, because those violations were brought ostensibly in the interests of national security and they were conducted in secret.

Impeachment stops this madness, and defines for posterity what is unacceptable behavior by the Executive Branch and the Commander-in-Chief in the interests of national security -- violations of the US Constitution, Federal and International Law are not justifiable, no matter what the threat.

It's absolutely essential to bring to bear the restorative properties of impeachment as a non-partisan effort to set standards of state conduct for future administrations.

Our national goal is to coerce the House Judiciary committee to pass articles of impeachment and garner support for the Kucinich Impeach Cheney bill (H Res 333), and our local goals include instigating the Santa Monica, Los Angeles and West Hollywood City Councils to pass impeachment resolutions joining nearly 80 cities and townships all across the nation that have passed impeachment resolutions.
