The contenders: Chicago, Detroit, Minneapolis, Oakland

WASHINGTON, DC -- The Green Party of the United States is preparing to decide on the site for the party's 2008 national nominating convention, at which Green delegates from nearly every state will choose a presidential nominee.

The four cities under consideration are Chicago, Illinois; Detroit, Michigan; Minneapolis, Minnesota; and Oakland, California.

"The Green Party's National Committee is discussing proposals from the four cities and is expected to vote on the site in late August," said Ruth Weill, co-chair of the party's Annual National Meeting Committee. "We've been very impressed with the presenters from the four sites, and we're excited and looking forward to the National Committee's decision."

Ms. Weill noted that the National Committee will use 'ranked choice voting' (instant run-off voting) to choose the site.

The proposals were introduced during the Green Party's 2007 national meeting in Reading, Pennsylvania. Previous Green Party convention sites are Los Angeles, California (1996); Denver, Colorado (2000); and Milwaukee, Wisconsin (2004).

Vote for Minneapolis! :)

commoner's picture

I heard today on some news show. Thus, the R governor is gonna be in one effing hurry to get that bridge replaced, so that the city does not become a flashing neon sign of Republicant skewed priorities (tax breaks for the rich vs. funding for the common good).

Update:
Well, Twin Cities, the main venue being in St. Paul. According to SourceWatch.

all the more reason to hold the Green conference in MN - get the news out that there really is an alternative challenge to the corporate-dominated single party oligarchy.

It ain't the Dems.

...the Motor City, Motown, the Renaissance City.

The tragedy of Minneapolis is writ large in Detroit, where it was once suggested that large areas of the city be depopulated and fenced off in order to save money.

If we're going to save this planet and save this county, let's start by saving a city.

Come to Detroit!

I voted for Minneapolis due to the reasons I outlined above, the success Greens have had in MN and the Minneapolis airport is the most pleasurable of any I have ever enjoyed. Another reason is that I've targeted Minnesota as a place I'd like to relocate to as soon as I can work out employment on that end. I've got happy feet and I need to either leave Kentucky very soon or plant roots here for good; nevertheless, it wouldn't break my heart if the convention was in Detroit as it's closer to my own Kentucky, attending would be more affordable due to the great gas mileage my Toyota Prius gets on the highway and I would love to be a part of one of these events.

The Colonel actually has a connection to Detroit. When I was a toddler, my pop was an electronical engineer for Ford and our family lived in Dearborn for two years. Many of my little guy pics were snapped there way back in the early 60s.

While I would prefer Minneapolis for professional reasons, Detroit is a very close second due to my childhood connections as well as the fact that your rationale for having the convention in Detroit is valid.

Peace

- Chicago is a huge media town with a rich labor, social justice and political history. Plus, Chicago is one of the largest cities to catch on to "green" technology.

- 2008 will be the 40th anniversary of the legendary antiwar protests 1968 Democratic Convention held in Chicago

- The IL Green Party has momentum from our 2006 governor's race, in which Rich Whitney got more than 10% of the vote statewide

- What better way to make BOLD statement by holding our convention in Hillary's hometown and Barack's backyard?
