slightly magical computer seeks home
Last summer I retired the computer "petra-k" which had been serving greens.org and about a hundred other domains. If computers collect positive karma, this one has a lot. It even got reincarnated.
I've replaced the parts that wear out (fans, hard drive, and motherboard) and set up a home office type system on it. I'm going to auction it off, proceeds to benefit my current server's access fees. Auction to end in time for the April GP of Cal general assembly in Berkeley. If you win and I can send it home with you (or a delegate from your county) we can save shipping. Will probably use Ebay.
The software is the most popular desktop "Linux" these days, Ubuntu "Gutsy Gibbon." Almost all of it is copyleft. Runs youtube smoothly. Neat SIP software phone, also runs Skype. Openoffice, scribus, the Mozilla suite, more. Does what most of us do with computers, safer and more reliable than the software system most people use, but highly compatible with that commercial stuff. Updates automatically, and adding new software is easy.
The hardware is generic desktop computer circa 2004. 1.8 GHz Athlon XP CPU (3600 bogomips), 1 GB RAM, 60 GB drive. More than adequate for office type work. Will customize for the winner. Monitor not included, but contact me off-blog if you'll need one.
