slightly magical computer seeks home

Last summer I retired the computer "petra-k" which had been serving greens.org and about a hundred other domains. If computers collect positive karma, this one has a lot. It even got reincarnated.

California Republican Hack du jour - Orange County's Chriss Street

The California Republican Hack Du Jour is Orange County Treasurer Chriss Street.

Orange County Funds Hold SIV Debt on Moody's Review

by Michael B. Marois and William Selway
Bloombeb.com
December 5, 2007

Orange County, California, the wealthiest U.S. municipality ever to declare bankrupcty, bought structured investment vehicles similar to those that caused a run on funds invested by local governments in Florida.

Twenty percent, or $460 million, of the county's $2.3 billion Extended Fund is invested in so-called SIVs that may face credit-rating cuts, said Treasurer Chriss Street. In all of its funds, the county holds a total of $837 million of SIV debt, including $152 million in its $3.5 billion of money-market funds that isn't under ratings review, said his spokesman, Keith Rodenhuis.
. . .
''We'll find out real quick if we have a problem,'' said the county's former Treasurer John Moorlach, who is now a county supervisor. ''But for now I need to be patient and wait and see.''
. . .
Moorlach sought to have Street stripped of his authority to manage the county's $6 billion of investments in September amid federal and local corruption probes. He said Street was too distracted by the probes to manage the county's money.
The U.S. Justice Department is investigating Street's spending from a bankrupt trucking company, allegedly for his personal use. . .

Let the whole church say "Amen" to those good old-fashioned Republican conservative "values."

General confusion in Washington

Moveon put a lot of money into their attack ad regarding General Petraeus. That obscured what other Generals (ret.) were saying. However, Josh Marshall at Talking Points Memo picked up on General Richard Sanchez and his devastating appraisal of the "W" administration.

General David Petraeus

General Petraeus
UPDATE:
UNITED STATES SENATE VOTES 72-25
TO CONDEMN MOVEON.ORG AD

AP - Washington, September 20, 2007 -- The Senate on Thursday overwhelmingly passed a measure condemning MoveOn.org for a newspaper ad it ran last week attacking Gen. David Petraeus. The move came as President Bush accused Democrats of cowering to the liberal political action group.

The amendment did not specifically name MoveOn.org, but expressed "the sense of the Senate that General David H. Petraeus, commanding general, Multi-National Force-Iraq, deserves the full support of the Senate and strongly condemn(s) personal attacks on the honor and integrity of General Petraeus and all members of the United States Armed Forces."

They couldn't vote up or down on a plan to give troops more rest between deployments, but they could vote for this. Unbelievable!

UPDATE: STUPID MARK SHIELDS ON THE PBS NEWSHOUR

To the left is the "controversial" full-page ad run by the MoveOn.org in the New York Times questioning the integrity of The Great General. This triggered a "backlash" that MoveOn.org was an "extremist" group that had "gone too far" (notice no Dems defended MoveOn despite all that MoveOn has done for them).

Unbelievable!

Green Party joins national antiwar demonstrations, blasts bipartisan Iraq, Iran policies

Greens, joining antiwar protests throughout September and October, hold Democratic leaders responsible for Bush's disastrous military and foreign policies

  • 'Faux Peace Party' Dems are collaborating with Bush by supporting threats of an attack on Iran and by renewing funding for the Iraq War, say Greens.

  • Greens call impeachment of Bush and Cheney an essential part of the demand for peace, urge Americans to be skeptical of GOP media propaganda blitz this week on the US troop surge.

Polar Bear 1, Sen. Inhofe 0

Oklahoma's Jean McMahon has a message for her Senator. Get a brain.

This story was first reported in the Tulsa World. But, it seems to have legs because it is just too perfect. Inhofe is a Global Warming Denier and political tool of the petroleum industry. McMahon is a Green with a sense for the appropriate gesture.

If there is one Senator who continues to do serious damage to the environment, it is Inhofe. I helped get rid of Richard Pombo (CA-11) from the House of Representatives. If there were ever a Senator that deserved to join Pombo's lobbying firm, it is Inhofe nad he will be up for election again. Maybe we can convince the Sooner's that the sooner we get rid of Inhofe, the better our government will be.

I would love to see a few more polar bears at Inhofe's gatherings, all over Oklahoma, whereever he might speak, let there be a polar bear to bear witness for the earth.

Green Party to decide on 2008 National Convention site

The contenders: Chicago, Detroit, Minneapolis, Oakland

WASHINGTON, DC -- The Green Party of the United States is preparing to decide on the site for the party's 2008 national nominating convention, at which Green delegates from nearly every state will choose a presidential nominee.

The four cities under consideration are Chicago, Illinois; Detroit, Michigan; Minneapolis, Minnesota; and Oakland, California.

Courting Green Bloggers for the 2008 Convention (and in general)

In the GP-US Media Committee we have a fantastic initiative on the table for attracting Green Bloggers to the 2008 Green Party Nominating Convention. A guerrilla marketing strategy in the finest progressive political tradition, the idea is to draw a healthy number of Green Bloggers to come, participate and do live blogging.

News from the convention in Reading

Brainshrub.com is doing a great job liveblogging the convention -- Paul is covering everything he can: workshops, plenaries, press conferences, chats with activists and candidates in the halls.

And, he's not even Green! But fear not, he is covering things very fairly, certainly than we could expect from mainstream media, should they honor us with their presence.

He says he's the only press there, and I guess that includes Indymedia. I would love to be there with Paul, covering the event as a Green blogger and web developer, but I can barely afford to maintain this site; there's certainly no budget for travel.

Anyway, please read Paul's reports, maybe comment and/or register there. He really goes all out to cover progressive events -- he came to Crawford early in August 2005, for instance (I know because I met him there).

And, based on what Paul has experienced and expressed frustration with, maybe the Party will be smarter, or at least more attentive, about communications technology next year. (And maybe some Green Commoners will be liveblogging the event.)

Attendees, please add your news/reflections in comments below, or in a new post.

I would especially appreciate any photos of the candidates, party officials, speakers, locations, etc. that we could use now and in the future.
